The Loneliest Player on the Field (x3)

Sunday Coed &-a-side Goalies
“My colleagues spend most of their time with their backs turned towards me. I don’t believe it’s because I am unpopular – honestly” (Brad Friedel)
“Being a goalkeeper gives you quite a unique perspective on things. You are part of a team yet somehow separate; there are no grey areas, with success or failure being measured in real time; and you have a physical job which you can only do well by paying attention to your mental well-being. A great goalkeeper has to have the keys to a great mindset. To be able to work well in the box, I believe you have to be able to think outside the box” (Brad Friedel)

The above picture comes from the first night of action in the Ottawa Footy Sevens Sunday Coed League at Carleton University. Even on the smaller 7-a-side fields, goalies can find that the game boils down to long periods of waiting followed by frenzied moments of desperate action. So, while we are all thinking about our mums tomorrow, let’s also spare a thought for your be-gloved team-mates at the other end of the field. . .
. . . like your mum, they’re often the person that bails you out of trouble when you mess up!
There’s a few more photos from Sunday below, and the full gallery can be found on the Footy Sevens Online Photo Galleries.
The Sunday and Friday leagues sold out in less than 2 days this season, but if you still want to join us on Raven’s Field at Carleton, we still have a few spots still available in our Saturday Coed League. There are over 20 teams already registered, so we’re looking forward to another cracking league kicking off on June 8th. Details and registration at the Ottawa Footy Sevens Website.
