Footy Sevens with the Jules Rimet Trophy

@Ottawafooty7s Advent Calendar Dec 13th 2014 – Footy World Cup

Footy Sevens at the World CupIt’s exactly 5 months since Germany won the World Cup in Rio, and here’s a couple of quick photos of Footy Sevens represented at the World Cup in Brazil. The first one is from the Mineirao in Belo Horizonte and Columbia’s 3-0 victory over Greece. It was a spectacular World Cup on the field, and the young Columbian team were one of the most exciting of the tournament. Even a few days before the World Cup started, the Columbian fans were around in huge numbers and partying pretty hard, probably more than any other country’s fans.

The second photo is with the Jules Rimet Trophy, the original World Cup trophy which was used from 1930-1970 when Brazil retained it by becoming the first team to win the World Cup three times. It can be found in the Museu do Futebol in Sao Paulo.*
* Technically it’s not the original, the original trophy was stolen from the headquarters of the Brazilian Football Federation in 1983 and never recovered. A bullet proof glass cabinet with a plywood back . . . D’oh!
There is a good ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on the odd history of the trophy which, as well as appearing in some of the most iconic soccer images of all time , also includes being hidden from Hitler, stolen from a postage stamp exhibition, sold for a quarter of million pounds and recovered by a dog named Pickles!
