300 Soccer players “Kick Cancer’s Butt” in Ottawa

Sunday saw 300 soccer players from all over Ottawa converge on the Louis Riel Dome in Blackburn Hamlet and raise over $5400 in aid of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. 24 coed soccer teams took part in the 1st annual “Kicking Cancer’s Butt” Charity Soccer Tournament.
After 10 hours of fast and fun soccer, only two teams were left standing and the final saw Mountain Do outlasting Booders Babes to claim a narrow 3-2 victory. Tournament organizer Chris Surgeoner presented the trophy the Mountain Do captain Christian Keller and Joel Convery of tournament sponsors Ottawa Footy Sevens presented a cheque for $5400 to Catherine Soucie of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.
“It was a fantastic day and we were blown away by the efforts and spirit of everyone involved” said organiser Chris Surgeoner, “and because of the incredible generosity of our teams, volunteers and sponsors, every expense was covered, allowing 100% of the entry fees to go directly to the charity. We had originally hoped for a 12 team tournament raising $1500. In the end, the response was so overwhelming that we ended up with double the number of teams and more than three times the donation and have decided to make it an annual event.”
Joel Convery, of tournament sponsors Ottawa Footy Sevens explained how they became involved in the fundraiser, “Chris and I were sitting having a beer in the pub, and he mentioned that he was planning a fundraising tournament. Ottawa Footy Sevens had already rented the dome to run a tournament for our league teams, but when I heard he was planning this event, I donated the field time to the Kicking Cancer’s Butt tournament and encouraged our teams to sign-up for that tournament instead. It was an unbelievable day and we are proud to be associated with an event that raised so much money for a local charity. It’s amazing to think that and event of this size all stemmed from a quick pint a few months ago.”
