As the Wednesday league at Carleton enters its final stretch a tight race has developed at the top of the table with only two points separating the top 5 teams. With only 4 regular season games remaining and only two teams qualifying for the playoff final, each and every goal could be crucial in the final weeks.
Holding Cell B had some breathing space at the top after last week’s games, but a narrow 2-1 defeat by False Madrid in the opening game of the evening gave the rest of the league the chance to close the gap. The Handball Bandits had the first chance to take over at the top, but went down 2-1 to Goonies and remained two points behind.
The next match saw Barracudas needing a win to join Cell B on 15 points, but they fell just short in the best game of the evening. Despite some late chances and a last minute back-heal flick dropping just on the wrong side of the post, they couldn’t overcome Best of the Worst and had to settle for a 4-4 tie and 3rd place.
However, the last team of the evening with a chance to take over the number 1 spot made no mistake. A clinical performance from Peladeiros saw them put 7 past cellar-dwellers Maroon 7 and join Cell B on 15 points. Their 3-2 victory over Cell B earlier in the season puts them in pole position due to the better head to head record.
With several clashes between the top 5 still to come, and most of the other teams still in convention, we could be well on our way to a cracking finish to the season.
