Today marks the 10th anniversary of the first-ever Footy Sevens League games!
At 8pm on Wednesday May 20th 2009, a small 6-team friends and family league that had grown from a series of pick-up games got underway at the Louis Riel Dome. The tiny blip on the Ottawa soccer scene was ironically titled “The Intercontinental Special Division”. KJ and Joel’s Black and White Army, The Ivory Coasters, Devin Bevin and his Select Seven, Ottawa Fury, Fog Duckers and Paul Wear’s Goalbusters were the exotic team names that have faded into the annals of Footy Sevens history, but there are still players from that original half dozen teams that have continued to play with us for the past decade (maternity breaks notwithstanding!)
The scores from that first day can be found below (and you can find the results and league standing from every Footy Sevens game and league from the past 10 years in the “View Archived Division” section of the Schedule/Stats page on the Footy Sevens Website.
We doubt any of the players (or the organisers) of that opening night would ever have envisioned that the league would still be going 10 years later or that it would have grown to over 400 teams playing in two cities. The league still plays on Wednesdays at Louis Riel in summer and in winter and we continue to try to uphold the values and standards from that first set of games. We salute those pioneers taking part in those first games, and would like to say a heartfelt thanks to all of the players, refs, staff and supporters that have been part of the league for the past 10 years and hopefully for many more years to come.
