Game of the Season Brings Curtain Down on Spring Sunday Leagues

Armee Rouge vs Premium CutsSunday saw the last of our spring Sunday leagues come to a close, and the men’s league final served up the type of final that most competitions can only dream about. The final brought together the two best teams from the regular season, Uke Boys and Bhikku Eboue (hereby referred to as BK as it is only a matter of time before I spell it incorrectly). in one of the best games to grace any Footy Sevens final.
BK looked comfortable with their early lead until a quick double from Uke Boys put them on the back foot. An equaliser on the stroke of HT sent the teams in level and the second half picked up where it left off with both teams peppering the other’s goal with shots. BK looked to have one hand on the trophy when they took a 4-2 lead, only to find themselves pegged back and then falling behind 5-4 to a resurgent Uke Boys. A deflated BK looked out of it until a deep diagonal ball into the box led to the equaliser they deserved, sending the game to PKs. After three PKs the teams were tied and sudden death continued with neither team making an error. When Uke Boys missed their penalty, BK had a single kick to win it, but saw their effort also saved. The marathon shootout was finally ended in the next round of penalties with a successful Uke Boys Kick and a smart save from their goalie.
Over on the coed side, perennial champions Armee Rouge had their hands full in the semi final, struggling to get past a stubborn Premium Cuts team, scraping through on penalty kicks after a hard fought 0-0 tie. Cell D were waiting for them, full of confidence after a thumping victory over Met U in the other semi final. The final was a finely paused affair  for the first 20 minutes or so which was reflected in the 1-1 scoreline. However once Armee Rouge regained the lead, they were back in championship form, running out 8-3 winners with a series of second half strikes.
Thank you to all of the teams taking part throughout the spring season in both leagues. A few of the photographs from yesterday can be found below, and all 60 photos can be found in our online photo galleries.
